The brown zones are of great value to the settlement if they are rehabilitated and reused. “Csepel Művek” was once the most extensive contiguous industrial complex in Hungary. However, it may seem that time has stopped in the area; hopefully the southern parts of the capital will be the most dynamically changing areas in the coming years. This transformation provides a unique opportunity for the stakeholders in the region to formulate a new vision focused on local resources to make the vast industrial and cultural heritage the basis for economic development and district renewal. This could be a good example of upcoming brownfield developments.
Csepel Művek – an international competiton
The brownfield area of the southern part of the city is a community of many unique companies that have been serving various Hungarian and international industrial needs for more than a hundred years. Today’s appearance, the settlement structure, and corporate culture of the former factory town were mostly marked by the wave of privatization after the regime change, which shattered the former socialist large-scale industry into several small and medium-sized enterprises. In this area, with a unique atmosphere of more than 230 hectares, there are more than 400 owners and hundreds of tenants, from one-person workshops to large companies with billions. Today, however, only street names reflect the former processes and spatial system of industrial work.
Diverse activities in the area include creative, service, and entertainment companies entirely independent of the original industrial functions. The successors of former large companies and companies that provide industrial, commercial, and logistics services that incorporate and complement the original activities can also be found. Thus, in addition to machine building, we can also find an art center, studios, film sets, a creative industry, and a famous bicycle manufactory side-by-side in Budapest. The Contemporary Architecture Center (KÉK) is looking for solutions that support the long-term mutually reinforcing and innovative development of the companies operating there.
Their next event – The weekend of open factories (2020. OKTÓBER 3.)

The future – Déli Városkapu competition
The renewal of Déli Városkapu and Csepel Művek could mean – one of the most significant developments that Budapest will undertake in the 21st century; it’s a fantastic opportunity to create a city that is capable of dealing with the challenges of the future. Both in terms of climate change, resilience, and social challenges that we are facing.
In the Déli Városkapu project and competition: the experts try to create a sustainable, livable city, mixed services (stundent city, sport functions) bordered by parks with outdoor functions and increase green and biodiversity areas. The first prize was won by the Innsbruck office of the Norwegian architectural workshop Snøhetta.
It is essential to emphasize the ability to meet the needs of various groups of people during the urban designing process. The development strategy of the area has already been prepared with modern, data-based analyzes. If it is implemented well, it could be an excellent example of the modern development of brownfield areas.
This partly an industrial, rusty area, which is located only 5 kilometers and 15 minutes from the city center, may be one of the most drastically transformed districts of Budapest in the future.
Respect for the experts who work on the task, their work is exemplary.
