From the on-site specialist to the construction sector project manager, everyone is severely affected by various forms of work-related stress. It is vital to examine the different factors that cause stress and the different phases and depths of stress an employee can go through.
“construction industry suffering from work stress”
We have to identify and focus on the causes of work stress and possible measures to counteract the (negative) impact of work pressure. A distinction was made between measurements in the area of primary prevention (changing the situation), secondary prevention (stress management), and tertiary prevention (trying to get a burned-out employee back to work as quickly as possible). Finally, it is important that employers and employees have to discuss the factors that hinder or foster efforts in reducing work stress.
The primary prevention has far more advantages than secondary and tertiary prevention. Nevertheless, construction companies are actively more engaged in the secondary and tertiary forms of prevention. Because they notice it late, or they may not necessarily be able to flow in and influence the situation. Unfortunately, the “project scenario” – like a bad habit – developed in the construction industry often involves poor process management from the very beginning. For example, design deficiency, lack of administration, continuous correction of resulting errors, congested work processes, lousy communication, night overtime in the office, resulting chased workers, nervous and tired project managers.
“because we failed to innovate”
The question is, how much more efficient, data science-driven workflows can improve the situation? Knowing that digital and optimized solutions and tools also affect the sector’s human side, are we willing to introduce these new solutions, aside from the reluctance/aversion to initial digitalization?
With this, we can stop and solve most situations already in the primary phase, so there is less burnout or even a change in the employees’ job.
